This slide presents a visually arresting look at pioneering work from Sandia National Laboratories in designing micromachines, a first mechanical step towards functioning nanotechnology. Mechanical design approaches will at some point converge with biological design approaches springing from studies of the functional processes of micro-organisms, not to mention the information storage, programming, and building capacity of DNA.
All these initiatives might eventually lead to a futures in which our environment is imbued -- or, some might say, infested -- with invisible machines working in concert to manipulate our physical surroundings and even ourselves.
